Matchday seven of eight in the league phase of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League sees 27th-placed Shakhtar Donetsk and seventh-place Stade Brest facing off at the Veltins-Arena in Germany. We’ve got a prediction ready in this crucial match between the Miners and the Pirates!
The pressure is on with only two league phase matches remaining. Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar has only a slim chance at qualifying for the knockout playoff as they will have to be near perfect and hope other teams trip up. Shakhtar have four points currently, putting them four points behind the top-24 spots. Should Man City, PSV and Dinamo Zagreb all win, then Shakhtar would be eliminated.
As for Brest, they’ll be battling for a spot in the top eight and thus an automatic position in the round of 16. The French club has a total of 13 points owing to four wins and a draw, giving them a slim one-point lead over ninth-place Dortmund. Brest will want to take advantage of this fixture as their final league phase matchup will come against holders Real Madrid.

This is the first competitive fixture for Shakhtar Donetsk since December 15th, when they fell to a 1-0 away defeat to Polissya in the Ukrainian Premier League. Prior to that, Shakhtar were crushed 5-1 on their home soil by Bayern Munich in matchday six of the Champions League.
The Ukrainian champions haven’t been in the best vein of form as they have just a single victory and three defeats in their last five competitive matches.
That includes dropping their last two straight in this competition, which has resulted in a 1-1-4 Champions League record for Shakhtar this campaign.
Stade Brest have been one of the biggest surprises in their first ever Champions League appearance.
Indeed, it’s been a memorable campaign so far for Stade Brest. They have a good shot at qualifying directly for the round of 16 with a top eight finish, but that might require three points here.
Les Pirates should be in fine spirits as they come into this contest riding a winning streak of three games. This includes an overall run of six wins from their last seven across all competitions.
In their most recent outing, Brest scored a 2-1 away victory over Stade Rennes in Ligue 1 which moved them up to ninth in the domestic standings. As for in this competition, Brest was able to secure a 1-0 home victory as sizable underdogs against PSV in matchday six.

The Ukranians will also be without midfielder Andriy Totovytskyi who is listed on the injury report although the reason is unknown. Left back Pedro Henrique is still suspended following his straight red card in Shakhtar’s 3-2 defeat to PSV in matchday five.
The star man for Shakhtar Donetsk is undoubtedly attacking midfielder Georgiy Sudakov.
22-year-old Georgiy Sudakov has been attracting plenty of interest from some of Europe’s biggest names.
The number 10 is his team’s leading scorer across all competitions with nine goals from 24 appearances while also registering four assists.
Brest come into this key matchup with a fairly lengthy injury list. Manager Éric Roy will be without no fewer than six players for his team’s trip to Germany.
That list includes: Bradley Locko (achilles tendon), Soumaila Coulibaly (pelvis), Jonas Martin (muscle), Julien Le Cardinal (hamstring), Jordan Amavi (hamstring) and Massadio Haidara (calf).
Striker Ludovic Ajorque and Brighton-loanee Abdallah Sima will spearhead this Brest attack. The two players are tied for the most goals in the team with seven each across all competitions.
Sima, in particular, has enjoyed a fruitful Champions League campaign as he has struck three times.
